The Gender Gap in Online Shopping - Who are the Top Buyers Online?



In the past decades, shopping is common among women since they are fond of buying different items they need – for home, personal use, office, and different aspects. However, as the online shopping existed, shopping is now becoming a common thing among men and women and even people of most ages.
When they shop online, they used to spend more, come up with snap decisions, and bring back less stuff. Who are they? The desirable online shoppers are men. Women and men are shopping distinctively in brick-and-mortar shops. Internet has been offering same efficiency and speed to these both genders. However, recent studies by retailers and analysts turned up the gender differences significantly in terms of online shopping.

It may be amazing to know that men got the most striking attention in terms of speed needs. According to the research analysts, men are valuing time more. But on the other hand, they are also spending much money online as well as on luxury. This finding had been coupled with relatively strong men apparel. The sales increased to 4.4 percent which is equivalent to $57.2 Billion in the previous year. This was compared with the 1.1 percent increase which is equivalent to $103.1 Billion when it comes to women’s apparel. This had been stated by the NPD Group market researcher which prompted more fashion online retailers to aim at these guys.

In response to this finding, there are several retailers that launched their own shopping sites for men only. Others had focused to men’s sections by tweaking their websites for faster and easier online shopping for men. Some of these shops have been giving different unique items for men’s apparel for them to stand out and be a common choice.

Men are also returning very few items. It has been stated that men are sending back items few than 10 percent of the apparel purchases. On the other hand, women are returning more than 20 percent of their apparel purchase. In addition, men do not want spending lots of time in shopping alone. It only takes them one third of the time that women take to purchase an item.

Other studies also revealed that most men are buying costly items. The clothes of women are still getting more attention when it comes to the online shop home pages of various major retailers. However, some shops start making their websites more attractive to men. They want to provide features that are allowing men to find many products in only a very short period of time. At the same time, they can find things online easily and quickly, not to let them click for many times.


Men are also regarded to be more tactical. Some major retailers had tweaked their sites to let both women and men to view their entire outfits and get featured in magazine ads and newspaper ads. While this feature is for both genders, the company officials still believed that men will likely use it. The explanations for shopping style differences vary but most analysts stated that women used to browse more without buying anything at times.

  2. Definitely the top online buyers currently are the women, however in certain sections men are taking the leap ahead. With more and more e-commerce, coming up, in different domains, the number of male shoppers is increasing rapidly. Women mostly shop in the category of apparels, while men stick to the tech based ecommerce. Even in the gifts section, women leads the men, however in certain cases like finding mother's day gifts, or gifts for wife, 'men' steal the show.
